The central gate

Opened in the west side of the settlement at Poliochne is the main gate, terminus also of the central thoroughfare 102. Both the street and the gateway appear to have been part of the first urban plan of the settlement, which is dated to the Blue period, and were kept unchanged throughout almost its entire existence, with some additions and local interventions.

Initially the gate shaped the opening made in the imagined line of the southwest enclosure wall, between the so-called Bouleuterion and Granary. Later, the opening was strengthened on either side, to the south, with two built structures of defensive character that in reality formed a propylon at the central entrance to the settlement. This point secured control and monitoring of the hinterland.

During the Red phase (2500/2400-2200 BC), it seems that in tandem with the expansion of the settlement westward, the propylon was enlarged with the addition of new parts.
