In 1939, Alessandro Della Seta was dismissed from the directorate of the IASA, while the site of Poliochni itself is counted among the victims of the Second World War. It was turned into a minefield by the Germans and military constructions were made in the archaeological levels, while the moveable finds from the site, scattered in Athens, Mytilene and Lemnos, were turned into an amorphous heap.
